1. GEM STRENGTHENING FAMILIES, STRENGTHENING COMMUNITIES PARENTING PROGRAMME {SFSC}Class

This is a group based course .It consists of 3 hour sessions, once a week, over 13 weeks. It provides information and strategies to empower parents. We are doing this course in Conjunction with Luton  Borough council family support commission.

The SFSC parent programme is based on a strengths based ‘facilitative model’, which aims to raise the consciousness of parents. In addition, the curriculum aims to help families develop or promote: strong ethnic and cultural roots; positive parent-child relationships; a range of life skills; self esteem, self discipline and social competence; and ability to access community resources. We have people of different multiracial, multicultural and multi faith backgrounds involved. The individuals discuss their individual values and arrive at a  collaborative conclusion that when people work identify their shared values they can arrive at a common ground that will build a violence free and mutual understanding  social community . We discuss common perceptions and discuss how when parents perceptions change, children’s perceptions also change. We discuss how to engage in social action. political , social as well as economic engagements . The SFSC Programme is the UK version of the US programme 'Strengthening Multi-Ethnic Families: A Violence Prevention Programme'. The programme  was originally developed by Dr Marilyn Steele and colleagues in the early 1990s. It has been adapted by Race Equality Foundation, working with parents and professionals and with the support of Dr Steele, in the UK.
In many communities already in the Uk This course has been found to be useful   to effect community change as well as parental and family engagement. As of now about 90% of the parents who have gone through the course across UK says they will recommend it to others. The typical clients we have in SFSC are women, who have been in abuse and whose children are violent. They are usually between the ages of 19-50years.  we have 60 % ethnic minorities and 20% white married  to ethnic  minorities as well as 10% Asians [Pakistanis] and 20% white

.The course provides information and strategies to-:

  • Empower parents.
  • Develop Positive Parenting Skills, Increase Confidence and self- esteem of parents in society, while maintaining their identity and ethnicity.
  • Understand boundary –setting with their children
  • Explore Family, religious and cultural values
  • The course in doing the above, emphasises on the family, religious and cultural values as the building block on which a healthy child is raised.
  • The course also emphasis mutual understanding as violence free community as the framework within which a healthy child can develop.
In view of the above the course encourages parents to make community engagements that help good child development. At the end of the course, the family is expected to be more engaged with society and their children. This helps their children, build self esteem and develop positive behaviour patterns as they become integrated into society. Also at the end of the course ,  our clients come together to start a community project. Our last class of parents started a Toy bank , where parents can walk in and access   used toys for their young children without paying.

me_on_easter_sundayWe reinforce youth positively. Especially black minority youths. We counsel them in problem areas, like abuse, anger, and other things that are inimical to their balanced growth, which can lead to a socially dysfunctional adult. Some of our youths are already in higher institutions now. We offered them career mentoring and life coaching. We also advise them to avoid teenage pregnancies, violence and drug or substance abuse. We ensure that they are motivated and focused to become achievers. For those who could not make the universities, we train them on either business start up programs or return to work skills.
